lava lamps

Students in Ms. Borgesi's Science class have been learning about the differences between mixtures and solutions and physical and chemical changes. The students mixed vegetable oil and water together to see how mixtures can be easily separated. Then, they added food coloring to show an example of a solution since the food dye and water can no longer be separated. Finally, students added pieces of Alka-Seltzer tablets into their bottles and watched what happened. They were able to see that this was a chemical change taking place since bubbles were forming and a new substance was created.

The students had so much fun making Lava Lamps!
